Invasive Species Of Lizards That Threaten Native Wildlife Found In Georgia

GEORGIA — An invasive species of lizards have been found in Georgia.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and their partners have documented more than 20 Argentine black and white tegus in the wild in Toombs and Tattnall counties.

These South American reptiles aren't supposed to be in Georgia and pose a threat to our native wildlife.

Tegus will eat the eggs of ground-nesting birds, including quail and turkeys, and will eat the young of gopher tortoises and American alligators, both protected species.

They can grow up to four feet long and weigh 10 pounds or more.

DNR wants to know about tegus in the wild, whether they're live or dead.

Report them by calling 478-994-1438, emailing gainvasives@dnr.Ga.Gov, or visit https://www.Gainvasives.Org/tegus.

What It's Like To Be Black And Argentine

Black people have had a huge influence on Argentina's history, but now they make up only one percent of the population of Buenos Aires.

Afro-Argentines, whose families descended from the slave trade, often feel like they've been written out of history and are mistaken for foreigners in their own country.

Sperm whale washes up in Ponte Vedra Beach

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – A dead 14-foot pygmy sperm whale washed ashore on Ponte Vedra Beach on Thursday morning behind the Sawgrass Beach Club. "Pygmy sperm whales are a common strander down here, actually, and they are an offshore species," FWC marine mammal biologist Nadia Gordon said. "They feed a lot on squid, so when they are found near the shore or on the beach, there's a problem -- something going on. There's a reason they are stranding."During low tide, the whale was removed from the beach. "Our agency will look at the animal, doing an external work up initially to see what's going on potentially and then, likely, a necropsy to look internally and see what's going on," Gordon said.
