If you've been thinking about getting a puppy over lockdown then you're not alone – the Kennel Club says the number of people welcoming new dogs into their homes last year soared to around 250,000. But choosing the right breed is absolutely essential – for example opting for a small dog if you don't have much room at home, or a hypoallergenic dog if you suffer from allergies. Another thing to take into account is that certain breeds are far more suitable for young families. Sea snakes imperilled by bycatch, lack of enforcement of regulations - Mongabay-India

Image
Bycatch might be causing a decline in sea snake populations at the Malvan coast of Maharashtra. Mechanisation in fisheries began as a plan for self-sufficiency in food production in the 1960s. The fisheries regulations are relatively recent concerns and are impeded due to the scale of trawling and the socio-economic complexities. In a recent study, marine biologists forewarn a decline in sea snake populations at the Malvan coast, a major landing port in southern Maharashtra. The authors flag that mechanised vessels are likely to be the main cause of this decline. "Sea snakes play an intermediary role in the ecosystem. They are prey and predators of marine fauna," informed Chetan Rao of Dakshin Foundation, Bengaluru and lead author of the study. Marine snakes are geographically widespread species that are critical to reef and coastal ecosystems in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indian and Pacific oceans. Their removal from the system could warp the

As Pit Bull Attacks Rise, Best Friends Animal Society Urges AZ to Stop Insurance “Blacklisting” Dog Breeds - City Watch

Image
"Utah's Best Friends Animal Society is urging the Arizona state legislature to support a bill (HB 2323) that would "prohibit insurance companies from considering the breed of dog for underwriting or actuarial processes for determining risk, liability, and other potential losses or any other matter related to claims involving dogs."  The breeds which could not be excluded "include Pit bulls, Akitas, Chow Chows, Rottweilers, and German Shepherds," according to the report.  Best Friends Animal Society describes itself as "a nonprofit no-kill animal rescue collaborative based in Kanab, Utah." (See report here.)  It is unclear whether Best Friends also has the non-profit lobbying status 50l(c)(4), to which donations are NOT tax-deductible.  Best Friends was also among the major organizations listed in support of a similar New York bill this month.   (See:   2022 N

3 different types of snake venom - Southlands Sun

Image
PROFESSIONAL snake catcher, Warren Dick, explains the different types of snake venom in this article. First and foremost, to avoid getting bitten, never pick up any snake that you are unsure of. South Africa is home to about 170 different species of snakes, only 18 of which are considered to be potentially deadly, and 23 others have venom that has little effect on humans. ALSO READ: WATCH: High spirits as Crow releases rehabbed python A snake's venom was never designed to be used in self-defence to kill humans, the purpose of the venom is to enable the snake to capture its prey. The myth that one can die in just a few minutes after a snake bite is simply not true, in most cases one has ample time to seek medical assistance. In South Africa there are three types of venom, neurotoxic, cytotoxic and haemotoxic. Neurotoxic venom: This type of venom is possessed by the mambas and the cobras. This venom effects the nervous system, one would experience pain at the bite site

Sunbeam Snakes Are Little Scaly Rainbows - Nerdist

Image
For most people, snakes probably inspire an Indiana Jones-like terror more so than any other feeling. But there's one kind of snake with whom you probably wouldn't mind being caught in a pit. One snake that can even dazzle you like Ruby Rhod or Robin Williams in The Birdcage . And that snake is the aptly named sunbeam snake. It's a little scaly rainbow and you're watching it right now, aren't you? Already mesmerized. My Sunbeam Snake🌈🌈 from gifs This particular video of a sunbeam snake, or  Xenopeltis unicolor , was posted to Reddit by user Sanzinia. According to Sanzinia's comments in the accompanying thread, he's aiming to breed sunbeam snakes and already has five of them. That may pose a challenge however, as sunbeam snakes are well known for having breeding trouble in captivity. (They're noted as not doing well with shipping or handling, apparently making them the antique vases of snakes.) It's unfortunate that sunbeam snakes

Lowchen Dog Breed Information, Pictures, Characteristics & Facts – DogTime - DogTime

Image
The Lowchen has a dense coat that is long and moderately wavy with a soft texture. Lowchens can be found in all colors and combinations, and there is no preference for any one color or combination. Lowchens can be clipped or kept in a natural coat. When clipped, they are given a "Lion Trim." The hair is shortened to 1/8th of an inch in length from the last rib to the rump, as well as on the legs, with cuffs of hair just above the feet. The tail is also trimmed, with a plume left at the tip of the tail. Regular brushing keeps the coat from tangling. This breed sheds very little. Brush your Lowchen's teeth at least two or three times a week to remove tartar buildup and the bacteria that lurk inside it. Daily brushing is even better if you want to prevent gum disease and bad breath. Trim his nails once or twice a month if your dog doesn't wear them down naturally to prevent painful tears and other problems. If you can hear them clicking on the floor, they're too long

There were eight on the schedule when I went to bed last night. There were twenty-four when I woke up. Yikes. We've got summaries of all of them, albeit somewhat brief in some cases. We also have a decent-sized list of new sales, plus the list of expiring discounts. Let's get to it! New Releases Escape Lala – Retro Point and Click Adventure ($0.90) SwitchArcade Highlight! Ah, so you can set eShop prices lower than $0.99. Informative. So you know what's weird about this one? It's actually really good. It's only playable in handheld mode, and it's quite short. But it's a fun little escape room/adventure game with a lot of neat details to poke at. Definitely worth the meager price it's asking, provided you aren't totally allergic to this genre.
