Mapping dog behavior - Nature.com

Image
Domestic dog breeds exhibit a diverse range of behavioral characteristics. To gain insights into the genetic basis of this diversity and how it was shaped by historical breeding practices, Dutrow et al. analyzed genomic datasets from a large collection of dogs, including purebred animals, pet dogs of mixed breed, semi-feral village dogs and wild canids. To account for the complex population structure of domestic dogs, they used a dimensionality reduction approach to define major lineage trajectories within their sample collection. They also used owner-reported questionnaire data from over 46,000 purebred dogs to calculate average behavioral metrics for each breed and then map these onto genetically defined lineage trajectories The strongest positive correlations were observed between the herder lineage and non-social fear and between the terrier lineage and predatory chas

Segura introduced by Marlins, talks plan to play third base - Yahoo News UK

MIAMI (AP) — Everything is about to be new for Jean Segura. He's got a new team, he's wearing a new number and the Miami Marlins are asking him to play a new position. The Marlins' third baseman — a position he played very sparingly in his first 11 major league seasons — put on a Miami jersey for the first time Wednesday when he was formally introduced at the team's ballpark. Segura agreed to a $17 million, two-year deal with the Marlins after spending the last four seasons with the reigning NL champion Philadelphia Phillies. He's appeared in 1,328 games. He's started at third base in only 21 of them, all those coming in the 2020 season with the Phillies. Almost the entirety of his career has been at either shortstop or second base. "I mean, I'm fine wherever the team wants me to go," Segura said. "I've been playing middle infield my whole career. I played a little bit in '20, third base, and I felt great there. It's another challe

Capital FM presenter and proud 'dog mum' Aimee Vivian appeared on ITV's Good Morning Britain with her pug Eva to discuss the issue. The 'pug advocate' told the panel that while she is '100 per cent' against a ban on the beloved breed, she would think twice about buying one again due to their health issues. '[Eva] is nine years old and I would like to say that if I was going to buy a dog now, would I get a flat-faced breed? No, b

Snakes I have known - Arkansas Times

Alan Leveritt BIG SAM: A rat snake who makes regular appearances on the farm. Arkansas Times publisher Alan Leveritt has lived on his great-grandparents' farm in North Pulaski County for 40 years. This is the latest in a series of columns about day-to-day life on the land where he raises heirloom tomatoes and other crops for local restaurants and the Hillcrest Farmers Market. W hen we rebuilt and moved into this old farmhouse, I thought I owned the place but quickly realized I was just another tenant. There was the spring nest of baby birds behind the bookcase. Or the period when there was a possum living in the HVAC system who would come up into the kitchen each night and eat the cat food. Or the hundreds of red wasps that would suddenly appear every summer, covering the vaulted ceiling of a newly built room. Or the dozen wild turkeys roosting on my back porch one morning, or a whole posse of deadly raccoons that turned my peacock pen into a melee of blood and beautiful feathers

Jim Brewer  |  Special to Ashland Times-Gazette Gracie Jeffries didn't expect to visit, eye to eye, with a gray rat snake. But that was her unexpected treat Friday, Jan. 13, when she was the first beneficiary of a close encounter with reptiles in her after-school session at the Olive Tree Care. "We are planning to set up presentations by different community resources as part of our program," said Kristy Spreng, director of Olive Tree. It is a battle between a German Shepherd dog and another dog against a number of coyotes. They chase each other back and forth and there is a lot of growling and snarling. Neither side is willing to concede defeat. The big difference is that the domestic dogs are being told what to do by their human companion. Just as the coyotes seem to be retreating, the German Shepherd is ordered to "Get them" by the handler. The brave dog manages to catch one of the coyotes and seems to fatally injure it. The others come back to try to help but it is too late. Couple's pandemic rescue is a rare find - Thousand Oaks Acorn

'BELIEVE'—Anna Penner and Colin Storm rescued a dog at the outset of the pandemic. They'd expected to meet a sheltie but instead adopted Teddy, a Norwegian lundehund— one of the rarest breeds in the world. Lundehunds have six toes and were bred to hunt puffins. He is named after Ted Lasso the TV character. A Thousand Oaks family adopted a six-toed canine, not knowing it was one of the world's rarest dog breeds, though they'd been looking for a sheltie. The married couple, Colin Storm and Anna Penner, both 37, had hoped to find a sheltie since 2019. The two had grown up with the breed and wanted to adopt one as their first dog together. After a search, the couple found a sheltie listing, without a picture, at an Apple Valley rescue. They drove for between two and three hours to meet the supposed sheltie, named Happy Fellow, in November 2020. "When we saw him, I was like, yeah, that is a very small amount of sheltie," Penner said. They assumed i
