Princess Kate announces she is being treated for cancer

Princess of Wales chose to wear a personal favourite for her emotional cancer video - and experts say it has a poignant symbolism.

Kate, 42, donned the low-key Breton-striped sweater for the recording last week, in which she announced she has been diagnosed with the illness. It is said she wanted it to help convey she is a "school-run mum, a wife and a homemaker" in addition to being the future queen.

The mum of three previously wore the garment during happier times, including in May 2019 for a trip to St Andrews where her relationship with Prince William blossomed and in April last year she was pictured wearing it in an official photograph of Prince Louis larking about in a wheelbarrow in Norfolk.

The 100 per cent Scottish cashmere sweater costs £650 from top label Erdem, though it has been praised for its youthful and fun look in the past. A journalist today said the sweater gave Kate "an everyday look," crucial for the narrative she intended to share.

"Really, in choosing this everyday look, the Princess was reminding the nation that she is not just 'ours' but also 'theirs', a private woman whose priorities must lie with her husband and children, parents and siblings, until her recovery is complete," writes Sarah Oliver in today's Mail on Sunday.

She added: "On a park bench in jeans and barely there make-up, her long hair loose, she was underlining the fact that cancer is no respecter of her life of privilege. And she was asking us for the understanding she needs to fight it in privacy.

"Sometimes, she is not a princess, but a school-run mum, a wife and a homemaker. That's the message Kate was sending when she revealed her cancer diagnosis in a low-key Breton-striped sweater. It's a personal favourite of the Princess of Wales who has reached for its jaunty nautical stripes on several earlier - and happier - occasions."

A royal expert revealed today that Princess Kate's "desperately upset" mother Carole Middleton will "need reassurance" after watching her beloved daughter tell the world of her cancer fight. Jennie Bond, a former royal correspondent with BBC, has urged the public to extend its sympathies to Kate's devastated mother Carole, who has had to watch on while frenzied conspiracy theorists scribe cruel claims about her daughter online, all while knowing the reality of Kate's condition.
