Though you can find them near lake shores and river banks in every state across RDR2's American West, you won't find them at every fishing hole you stop at. Western Toads keep to particular hopping grounds in each state, so we've saddled up our horses and staked out all of the banks and shorelines to find you the best Western Toad locations in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Western Toad Locations

New Austin

  • Down in the arid New Austin climate, Western Toads can be found along the bank of the San Luis River. This habitat spans nearly the entire southern border of the Rio Bravo region.
  • Western Toads also gather in greater numbers around the network of streams known as Stillwater Creek.
  • On the opposite side of Thieves's Landing, another population of Western Toads lives on the island between Thieve's Landing and Quaker Cove. They primarily keep to the island's eastern shoreline, but you may find a few on the southern banks as well.

West Elizabeth

  • On the West Elizabeth side of the Lower Montana River, Western Toads make their home on the river's upper stretches.
  • All around the banks of the Aurora Basin is a promising location to catch toads as well.
  • Western Toads make their home along the Upper Montana River as well, towards the mouth of the river just before it opens up into Flat Iron Lake.
  • Just north of there, Western Toads can be found in a more extensive habitat at the mouth of the Dakota River.
    • From there, you'll find a smattering of good hunting locations leading upstream on both the West Elizabeth and New Hanover banks of the river.

Ambardino

  • Continue following the Dakota River upstream, and you will eventually come to more prime toad hunting locations in Ambardino.
    • The stretch of the river directly west of Valentine is usually a safe bet, as is the length north of the city as the river reaches the Cumberland Forest border.
  • O'Creagh's Run is the other location you'll want to check for toads in Ambardino. Unlike some of the other pools, Western Toads can be found on every bank encircling the pool, providing O'Creagh's run with a croaky choir for some natural ambiance.

New Hanover

  • The northern stretches of Roanoke Ridge will be the best toad hunting you're like to find in New Hanover. They line the banks of the Kamassa River, from west of Annesburg to just south of the Brandywine Drop.
  • The Heartland Overflow and the tiny pond just to the northeast is also a great spot to catch some toad. Like at O'Creagh's Run, you should be able to find Western Toads all around the overflow, and the same goes for the pond up north as well.

Lemoyne

  • Naturally, Western Toads seem to prefer Lemoyne's humid climate and gravitate in the most significant numbers around the Bayou Nwa and Bluewater Marsh. Like the more aggressive Bullfrog, Western Toads can be found hopping to and fro virtually everywhere in the swamplands, except for within the city borders of Saint Denis.
  • You can find a smaller Western Toad habitat residing in the wetlands along the southeastern border of Calliga Hall.
  • If all else has failed, head over to the isles off of Lemoyne's western shores in Flat Iron Lake, which the warty amphibians seem to have claimed as their personal toad kingdom. Don't worry; you shouldn't have to kiss a toad prince or anything.
