American Horror Story Season 10: What Was The Point Of The Lizard People? - Screen Rant
American Horror Story season 10 introduces a species of Lizard People in its finale episode, but the quick reveal of their existence is barely explained. Death Valley follows two timelines, one in the past depicting President Eisenhower's treaty with aliens that allows extraterrestrials to abduct thousands of humans in exchange for technological advancements, and one that follows modern-day college students being abducted and impregnated by said aliens. While American Horror Story season 10's alien return was highly anticipated by fans, Death Valley was poorly received for its underwhelming conflict and story.
Death Valley's black-and-white timeline actually showed promise in an interesting premise compared to the modern timeline, but it underdelivered by hardly being able to explore the famous national events reimagined in the show. American Horror Story season 10 introduced several new explanations for long-held American mysteries and conspiracies, but it couldn't properly explore the changes or provide enough depth to be captivating. Death Valley ended up blaming aliens for aviator Amelia Earhart's disappearance, Marilyn Monroe's death, President John F. Kennedy's assassination, Richard Nixon's Watergate Scandal and resignation, and Stanley Kubrick faking the moon landing. These are inherently interesting plotlines to introduce, yet they hardly received explanations.
To top it off, Death Valley's finale episode revealed there were Lizard People who had also invaded Earth, but gave even fewer reasons for their purpose than the aliens in Asylum. American Horror Story season 10's second half was primarily focusing on aliens' purpose on Earth, but the shortened season and dual timelines even left their overall significance and plan underdeveloped. For this reason, it's highly odd that Death Valley introduced another alien species of Lizard People in its season finale. The species was hardly explained and randomly thrown into the plot, leaving even more questions than Death Valley's abrupt cut-to-commercials ending. What's more, robot liaison Valiant Thor (Cody Fern) quickly told Mamie Eisenhower (American Horror Story's Sarah Paulson) that they would allow the Lizard People to inhabit Earth alongside them, but not among human beings.
Death Valley's season 10 finale began with Nixon's hesitancy about the aliens requiring war in Vietnam, all the while American Horror Story subtly reveals that Secretary of State Henry Kissinger is, in fact, a Lizard Person. Valiant Thor tells Mamie that while the aliens will eventually want the Earth to themselves, the Lizard People cooperate far better than humans and provide far more benefits as they can share technological innovations. Humans essentially became breeding machines and lab rats for the aliens, while the Lizard People apparently brought more expertise to the table. When Thor first discovered a Lizard Person on Earth, he burned the body to avoid competition. Yet, American Horror Story season 10's aliens ended up deciding it was more advantageous to coexist with them.
American Horror Story has yet to do a reptilian creature feature season - which would actually have some ground to it - so it's possible Death Valley's Lizard People will return to the series in the future. The Lizard People conspiracy also follows Freak Show's Lizard Girl, though her nickname was based on how her father mutilated her rather than an actual reptilian species. American Horror Story almost introduces too many conspiracies in season 10 for its own good, distracting from the aliens' actions while only having a few minutes to dive into them. Digging into conspiracies under a different mindset of alien control is an interesting premise, but it would have benefitted from a full season to truly explore the ramifications and purposes for such events. Rather than splitting Red Tide and Death Valley for season 10, it would have been more intriguing to see AHS: Conspiracy as a season covering the same general plot, albeit explored in depth like season 7's Cult.
