Associated Press Feds seek to protect map turtles in 4 Gulf states, Georgia The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced Monday that it is proposing threatened status for the Pearl River map turtle, seeking to grant added federal protections to an at-risk species found only in Louisiana and Mississippi. "These native freshwater map turtles are at risk and need our help," regional director Leopoldo Miranda-Castro said in a news release. The agency said it also would seek protection for the closely related Pascagoula map turtle, found only in Mississippi, and three other species found in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee because they look like the Pearl River turtle.

Snake breeder discusses snake with 3 smiley face markings Justin Kobylka, a snake breeder in Georgia, sold a rare ball python for $6,000 after the reptile ended up with the shape of three smiley faces on its body. GAINESVILLE, Ga. - A snake breeder in Georgia is receiving s-s-so much attention for a rare ball python he sold for $6,000 with the shape of three smiley faces on its body. Justin Kobylka of J. Kobylka Reptiles has been breeding snakes for two decades. With this particular snake, called a lavender albino piebald ball python, or "dreamsicle" ball python for short, many are drawn to its bright golden yellow and white color combination. Every so often, Kobylka says, breeders will notice a snake with a smiley face in its markings, but "it happens very randomly." "When it does happen, it's extra special," he said. "But this particular animal that's on the news happened to have three of them on it, which is just astronomi...

Viral Footage Shows 'World's Largest Snake' Being Lifted Out of Rainforest - Nature World News

Image
A TikToker managed to film an incredible moment when a digger lifted the "world's biggest snake" out of the rainforest in Dominica, leaving viewers in shock. (Photo : Getty Images) World's Largest Snake  The snake, which is at least 10 feet long, is raised in the claws of the digger at a height, but is still nearly able to touch the ground, according to the clip. The snake was still alive when it was brought out, as it could be seen moving around in the claw (perhaps wondering what's going on). Of course, the creature's enormous size astounded one eyewitness who couldn't believe what was happening in front of his eyes and said, "My mother, what?" It appears that workers uncovered this significant discovery while clearing a section of Dominica's jungle.  The video rapidly went viral after TikToker @fakrulazwa uploaded it, and it now has about 81.5 million views which might increase. The digger pulling up t...

"Demoing and collecting ideas is like money in the bank," Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell says of the songs from his new solo album, Brighten , released on Oct. 29. "There's all sorts of great ideas that never get used or don't get attended to, or they don't fit the time or the record you're working on. And the cool thing is they're always there." Cantrell pulled out all the stops for Brighten , his first solo record since 2002's  Degradation Trip . He coproduced the LP with film score composer and former Marilyn Manson guitarist Tyler Bates, and he enlisted an all-star cast of musicians including Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan, Paul McCartney drummer Abe Laboriel Jr. and Dillinger Escape Plan vocalist Greg Puciato.  The resulting nine-song project features the melancholy vocal harmonies and multilayered guitars that be...

Iowa Repairman Welcomed to Job Site By Large Snakes - khak.com

Image
When your job is to fix things, especially those that are outside, you never know what you're going to find. However, I expect the man sent to this repair job was more than a little surprised by this welcoming committee. That Photo is the Stuff of Nightmares Earlier this month, a man who works for Mort's Water Company in Latimer, near I-35 in north-central Iowa, was called to investigate a well that wasn't working properly. When the repairman arrived he pulled a pipe up out of the well. The photo above shows the pipe and some of the "8-9 bull snakes" that were wrapped around what's called the pump drop pipe. I would've quit on the spot, and still had nightmares for a month. How Did They Get in the Well? According to Mort's, "thorough the top of a poorly sealed well casing". I'm sure the homeowner will make sure that never happens again. It turned out the well's pump and motor needed to be repaired, with the issues not caused by the s...
