What Is the Biggest Snake in the World? - Animals | HowStuffWorks

Image
"[Females] grow longer than males in both the reticulated python and the anaconda, so the biggest snake in the world (wherever she is) is doubtless a female," notes Shine. "In terms of length, it will be a reticulated python in Asia, but that snake will be massively outweighed by some beautiful senora in South America." "The question of size is a tricky one," says Rivas. Imagine if someone asked you, "What's the largest land mammal?" According to Rivas, you would "answer before hesitation" that it's the African savanna elephant. "Nobody would start belly aching as to how much taller giraffes are. Simply because when we mean size, mass is the determining factor," he says. "That is why I simply say anacondas are the largest snakes in the world, period." OK, but — how big do they ...

‘Cobra Kai’s Alicia Hannah-Kim On Playing A “Delicious” Baddie, ‘Squid Game’ Dreams & What The Future Holds for Kim Da-Eun - Deadline

Image
Alicia Hannah-Kim's latest role as the first female sensei in Netflix's Cobra Kai may give observers the false impression that she's an overnight success. But before her likeness was wrapped around a building in the famed Los Angeles shopping mall The Grove, she was waiting tables, auditioning, and dreaming of one day being the representation she lacked growing up in her native Australia. Hannah-Kim, who is of Korean descent, recalls her difficult journey climbing that Hollywood ladder which includes having to turn down stereotypical roles, rejection, and thoughts of giving up before she got the call for Cobra Kai . "Being an 'overnight success' is such a charming concept and so wholly untrue in my case. I have endless respect and solidarity with actors who are out there self-taping and auditioning into what feels like oblivion because I have been in those trenches for years," Hannah-Kim tells Deadline. "T...

11 Not-So-Secret Facts About the Freemasons - Mentalfloss

Image
As the world's oldest secret society, the Freemasons have had several hundred years to influence history, build an impressive membership roster, and inspire a body of legend and speculation that ranges from the probably true to the demonstrably ridiculous. While most of the conspiracy theories surrounding the organization are, to put it mildly, bizarre—we're pretty sure lizard people aren't pulling their strings—you don't have to venture to the fringe to find fascinating, sometimes-strange stories about Freemasons and their complicated legacy. From being on the receiving end of a papal ban that has lasted almost 300 years to forever changing the face of American politics, here are 11 things you should know about the Freemasons. Conventional wisdom dates the foundation of Freemasonry to 1717, when the first Grand Lodge was established in England—but that lodge was founded to govern Masonic lodges that were already in operation. The roots of the order go back at least to ...

These lizards are the holy grail of herpetology—they’re also targets in the illegal wildlife trade - Popular Science

Image
The following is excerpted from Poached: Inside the Dark World of Wildlife Trafficking by Rachel Love Nuwer. As with most facets of wildlife trafficking, the immensity of the pet trade can quickly become overwhelming. But homing in on one peculiar yet exemplary case study can help bring the subject into focus: that of the earless monitor lizard of Indonesia. The story begins on May 30, 2008, when a research team armed with GPS units, notebooks, and binoculars set out into a dense patch of jungle in Indonesian Borneo. An oil palm company had commissioned them to survey the area for important environmental and cultural assets that might be impacted should the forest be converted into a plantation. They had no idea, however, that an "exceptional herpetofaunal discovery" awaited them that morning, they later wrote. As midday approached, the sweating group decided to take a break from their uphill trek to have lunch next to a shallow, rocky stream bed. Glancing at the...

APOPKA, Fla. – An incredible video out of Apopka, Florida shows a gigantic reptile climbing up a man's door. Reptile expert Mike Stefani, who specializes in monitoring lizards, told FOX 35 Orlando his first thought upon seeing the video was that someone's pet probably got loose. Juice, as you'll probably know, comes in all sorts of varieties too. The ever-popular orange juice tends to dominate the juice world, but there are many other popular types besides. Apple is also a quintessential juice flavor, as is the particularly tart grapefruit juice, and so on. Many people have many different favorites. While they can all be lumped into the simple category of "juice," there are vital distinctions to be made. Which brings us to the whole tortoise and turtle issue. As Britannica reports, both turtles and tortoises are defined by their characteristic shells, and their classification as both reptiles and members of the Testudines order. In this regard, they are very similar. What sets them apart from each other?  It boils down to their lifestyle habitats and eating habits. In terms of food access, the two go hand in hand, and this is just one important reason why you'll never see a tortoise in your local swimming pool. ...

By Cristiana Caruso and Michelle Gillan Larkin Dogs have held the distinction of "man's best friend" for probably as long as they've been domesticated, which genetic studies indicate is anywhere between 20,000 and 40,000 years — in human years! Affectionate, playful, and deeply loyal, dogs give as much joy and comfort to their human companions as humans give to them (plus a whole lot of unconditional love). And when they are paired with the right partner, fed the proper foods, and rewarded with an extra-special treat every now and then, it's truly a dog's life for all involved.
